Honoring Freedom on Juneteenth

Posted on June 19, 2025

On June 19th, we come together to honor Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates the strength and contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history. Today is a day for reflection—a time to recognize the progress that has been made and the work that lies ahead.  Today we celebrate freedom, unity and a shared purpose.

We are  “One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for ALL!”

~Just by divine timing, we visited the Harriet Tubman Museum, 6 years ago on this date! Unaware of the significance, it was a moving experience and I wanted to share a snippet from our travel blog that I posted after that visit.
“So, where were we? Oh yes, the tunnel that scared me half to death! Since then, things have been much calmer on the roads in Maryland…and might I add, the best kept roads so far! All the back roads are called The Blue Crab Scenic Byways. Beautiful farms that go on and on for miles on end…people riding John Deer tractors down the middle of the road, forcing us to slow down, which in turn helps us to spot things we would not have seen…like the red winged blackbirds darting around the corn fields. Remarkable!

The little towns have great names like Bivalve and Harmony and Chance…Our campsite is overlooking the Chesapeake Bay and we have been treated to wonderful sunsets each night…Our days have been filled with exploring. Today we visited the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Museum and were struck by this woman’s incredible bravery. She was born nearby and escaped into “free” Pennsylvania, only to return repeatedly to guide many to their freedom. During a 10 year span she made 19 trips, saving hundreds of souls. She served in the Union army as both a nurse and a spy. (Mimi’s eyes teared up many times during this visit…)

Harriet Tubman’s given name was Aramita,

but her courage earned her the nickname Moses.

We should all be so brave, so resolute. Her determination is an inspiration.

One of my favorite Harriet Tubman quotes is this: “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, patience and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” ~HT
